I. Introduction
a.
Did you know that America is the most
obese country in North America?
b.
An
average adult is 26 pounds heavier now than in the 1950’s (World Atlas).
c.
From
the rising rates of fast food chains, of it being one of the reason of a
unhealthy lifestyle, obesity today has now risen to having 35% of Americans
being overweight. Also having cheap ingredients, damage our bodies.
i.
We may not be the most obese country in
the world, but we are certainly not to far off to being the most obese. The
United States is ranked the #12 most obese country in the world. (World Atlas).
ii.
“The
United States is the most obese country in North America with 35% of its
population having a body max index of over 30.0 Nearly 78 million adults and 13
million children in the United States deal with the health and emotional
effects of obesity every day. According to the CDC an average adult is 26 pounds heavier now than in the
1950’s” (World Atlas).
II. Sub-Topic #1: You
would think that salad would be a healthier choice at a fast food restaurant, also
they use cheap ingredients which doesn’t make your case any better.
a.
Some healthy food choices at fast food
places, like a salad isn’t technically the best meal to get there.
i.
“Even if you’re in good health, try to avoid
poor food choices, especially the obvious culprits that are deep fried,
swimming in cream or butter, showered in salt or glittering with sugar. Even a
salad that may seem healthy is just a few dollops of fatty dressing away from
being bad for your heart” (American Heart Association).
1. When you think of a healthy side dish, usually you would
think of salad. Since we don’t like to eat just plain lettuce, we choose to dip
it into sugary, gooey salad dressing to make it taste better. These dressings
can contain many calories, and grams of sugars. Which if you are on a “diet”
that wouldn’t help you out much, but it is better than a Big Mac
ii.
“A salad loaded with bacon, salty high-fat
dressing and cheeses can have more calories than a hamburger or piece of
thin-crust cheese pizza,” Van Horn said (American Heart Association).
b.
The reason why many people eat fast food is because it has low prices,
therefore they buy cheap ingredients.
i.
“The
truth is that it’s extremely difficult to follow a healthy diet when you’re
eating regularly at fast food restaurants. Fast food restaurants typically use
the cheapest ingredients possible in order to keep costs down. That means that
foods that otherwise could be considered healthy may not be when ordered from a
fast food chain. For example, cheese can be a good source of protein and
calcium, but the cheese topping your burger or covering your pizza is most
likely heavily processed, made from non-dairy ingredients” (Smith).
1. Considering the food is cheap, they would obviously use
cheap ingredients. If they did have high prices, they would use better
resources. Some of the ingredients they buy aren’t probably real, made
correctly. Or maybe it is processed food, like from a can. You never know if
the supplier cleaned it right or treated it correctly.
ii.
“Cheese
can be a good source of protein and calcium, but the cheese topping you burger
or covering your pizza is most likely heavily processed, made from non-dairy
ingredients” (Smith).
III. Sub-Topic #2: What
are the effects of always eating fast food?
a.
There are many effects and illnesses that come with always eating fast food.
i.
“Fast Foods often contain too many
calories and too little nutrition. If fast food is a regular component of your
diet, you might find yourself struggling with weight problems and ill health”
(Pietrangelo, Carey).
1. One
of the biggest effects of always eating fast food is obesity. Eating these
non-nutrition foods that contain many calories and sugars can cause overweight
problems.
ii. “These foods are often high in calories yet offer little
or no nutritional value. When
fast food frequently replaces nutritious foods in your diet, it can lead to
poor nutrition, poor health, and weight gain. Tests
in lab animals have even shown a
negative effect in short duration diets. Being overweight is a risk factor for
a variety of chronic health problems including heart disease, diabetes, and
stroke” (Pietrangelo, Carey)
b. The effects of eating Fast Food are,
i. Health risks are extra
calories, insulin resistance, high blood pressure, bloating and puffiness, blood sugar spike, and maybe death
(Pietrangelo, Carey). And those are only
half of them.
1.
You would rather have these deadly risks, than just make a healthy homemade
meal? These are the worst the effects can get, also don’t forget the other one
that can also cause death is obesity. If you are too overweight your body can
just stop functioning.
ii. “Obesity increases the likelihood of heart
disease, high blood pressure, kidney disease, diabetes, joint problems, and
more” (Pietrangelo, Carey).
IV. Sub-Topic #3: How our fast food chains has doubled
and so has our obesity.
a. Having fast food chains and obesity
doubled isn’t a good thing.
i. “The Obesity
Action Coalition (OAC)
reports that the number of fast food outlets has doubled since 1970, a period
during which the number of obese Americans also doubled” (Pietrangelo, Carey).
1.
Having our world turn into a fast food ran earth, makes this situation even
worse. Because now many people eat it for a quick meal.
ii. Having our fast food chains double isn’t a good thing because since
there are so many around, people will just eat it now for no reason.
V. Sub-Topic #4: Why do people choose to eat fast food?
a. So
many people eat fast food, but why do they feel the need to hurt their bodies,
maybe they just don’t know what is actually happening to them.
i. “Nearly 600 adults
and teens in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area were interviewed for
the study in 2005-2006. Most reported eating fast food at least three times per
week” (Hitti).
1.
After they were interviewed some of the answers that Hitti are, They're quick They’re easy to get to, I like the taste of
fast food, They’re inexpensive, I’m to busy to cook.
ii. Some of these answers make sense, its
like they don’t want to eat it. May people struggle with money, or they are
busy trying to make this money. But the ones that answer with I like the taste,
well maybe because they uses many dangerous chemicals to make it taste that
certain way.
VI.
Conclusion:
a. Every year we
open up so many more fast food chains, and every year more people become
overweight. Having America be the most obese country, in North America. Its not
any better when they buy “real” or cheap products, that effects our health
tremendously.
